PAR Disposable Ruler

The Peer Assessment Rating Index is an accurate, reproducible and robust way of assessing the standard of orthodontic treatment that has been validated against the subjective opinions of 74 dentists.

The PAR Index is used as a standardised quantitative method to assess malocclusion and evaluate treatment standards and outcomes by examining pre- and post-treatment study models.

There are 7 components which are scored: labial irregularity (upper and lower), buccal occlusion (left and right), overjet, overbite, centreline.4 and 5 indicating more severe malocclusion requiring the provision of orthodontic treatment.

A weighted value is given to each feature that deviates from an ideal occlusion then added together to generate an overall score representing the severity of the malocclusion.

The PAR Ruler is designed to make simple objective measurements of the seven PAR Index components with a difference in score reflecting any change achieved in terms of overall alignment and occlusion. This allows assessment and comparison of orthodontic treatment provided.
